UMC begins mass production of silicon photonics in Singapore

United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) announced the initiation of mass production for silicon photonics wafers at its new facility in Singapore. The production ramp-up showcases UMC's collaboration with local company SILITH Technology, which helped transition the silicon photonics platform from development to production within 18 months.

UMC is part of a trend among Taiwanese semiconductor firms to expand manufacturing in Singapore, which is becoming a regional hub for the industry. Other firms, including King Yuan Electronics Corp and Vanguard International Semiconductor Corporation, are also advancing their capabilities in this location, drawing in significant investments.
