AI Augments Learning in Sierra Leone, Showing Significant Student Gains

Trial Overview

A pre-registered trial was conducted in Sierra Leone to evaluate the impact of AI on education. The study aimed to understand how AI can act as a pedagogical partner, focusing on strengthening student understanding rather than providing direct answers.

Guided Learning Approach

The Guided Learning system was developed from extensive research and seeks to enhance cognitive engagement among students. Data showed that during the trial, students used the AI tool for conceptual understanding in 91.4% of their interactions, with the AI posing scaffolding questions in 76% of cases.

Teacher Involvement

Teachers played a crucial role in the success of the trial, designing lessons and guiding discussions. Educators reported that working with the AI tool improved their lesson preparation and facilitated a shift in their teaching style from traditional lecturing to more interactive facilitation.

Quantitative Results

The trial yielded significant findings, with students using Guided Learning achieving a gain of +0.258 standard deviations in math scores. This improvement equates to approximately 1.2 to 1.7 years of typical learning progress within just eight weeks.

Future Implementation

To enable other educators to replicate these results, a teacher training guide has been created, detailing the protocols and strategies used during the study. This aims to broaden the implementation of AI-supported learning environments globally.
