Launch of the Rust Foundation Maintainers Fund

The Rust Foundation has recently established the Rust Foundation Maintainers Fund (RFMF) to financially support the development efforts of Rust maintainers. This initiative aims to provide stable funding sources to key contributors who manage essential components of the Rust ecosystem.

Objectives and Programs within the Fund

The RFMF's primary goal is to facilitate the maintenance and development of Rust's toolchain by ensuring that maintainers are adequately supported. A newly established Funding team will engage with Rust Project members to assess their financial needs and promote investment opportunities from companies into Rust maintenance efforts.

Maintainer in Residence Program

The Maintainer in Residence program focuses on directly funding existing maintainers to work on critical parts of Rust, such as the compiler and standard library. Activities supported by this program will include code reviews, feature unblocking, and mentoring other contributors. Selected maintainers will receive funding based on their project's needs and available funding.

Long-Term Support and Sustainability

The creation of RFMF and the Maintainer in Residence program signifies a long-term commitment to the sustainability of Rust. This initiative seeks to stabilize funding for maintainers to enable them to prioritize vital maintenance tasks, thus ensuring the ongoing health of the Rust Project.
