The Lens mode, conversely, focuses concentrated effort on a single, well-defined objective, much like a lens directs light to a specific point.

Greenhouse Mode: Exploration and Discovery

Greenhouse mode is suitable for projects where the desired outcome is not yet clear. This approach encourages experimentation and allows for the generation of numerous possibilities, even if many are discarded. An example includes using AI to generate multiple tools for plottable art or a simple utility app without a prior specification, where the goal is to discover what might be useful or interesting.

Lens Mode: Focused Execution

Lens mode is applied when the end goal is precisely known. In this mode, all efforts are concentrated on achieving that specific target, and any deviations are discarded. This approach leverages AI for efficient execution towards a defined objective, highlighting the power of agentic AI when directed at a known target.

Applying the Right Mode

The effectiveness of agentic AI tools depends on matching the mode to the task. Frustration often arises when an exploratory task is approached with a focused 'Lens' mindset, or when a defined goal is pursued with a 'Greenhouse' approach. The reduced cost of experimentation with AI tools has made the 'Greenhouse' mode more accessible for rapid prototyping and discovery.
