Amazon's chief sustainability officer, Kara Hurst, recently stated that the company does not yet know all the methods it will employ to achieve its goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. This admission was made at an Axios event, where Hurst emphasized the ongoing effort towards the target despite the lack of a complete plan.

Scale of Amazon's Operations and Emissions

Amazon, with a revenue of $717 billion last year, operates across numerous sectors including aviation, AI, agriculture, and construction. This broad operational scope means its carbon emissions are distributed widely, requiring collaboration with suppliers across various industries to meet its sustainability objectives. Hurst noted that tackling climate change requires both companies and governments working together.

Current Sustainability Efforts and Setbacks

Amazon has been a significant investor in clean energy, acquiring 42 gigawatts in its portfolio, making it one of the largest purchasers globally. The company also reported a reduction in carbon intensity (pollution per dollar of revenue) over a longer timeframe, though carbon intensity increased in 2024 compared to 2023. However, Amazon's plans to build a 7.65 gigawatt natural gas power plant for an AI data center campus, potentially emitting up to 33 million tons of carbon dioxide annually, have raised concerns about its commitment to decarbonization.

Accountability and Future Outlook

Despite the challenges and conflicting initiatives, Amazon maintains its commitment to The Climate Pledge goal of net-zero carbon by 2040. The company acknowledges its responsibility while also highlighting the need for collective action across industries and governments to address climate change effectively.
