Andy Pavlo, formerly a professor in the Computer Science Department at Carnegie Mellon University, has joined ClickHouse. His role is to establish and lead a new research team named ClickHouse Labs. This move signifies ClickHouse's investment in dedicated research for database technology.

Background and Motivation

Pavlo has a career focused on understanding modern database management system internals and has tracked ClickHouse's development since its open-source release in 2016. He noted ClickHouse's early adoption of features like C++ implementation and vectorized query execution using SIMD, which were uncommon in open-source analytical DBMSs at the time. The opportunity to work with ClickHouse's engineering team on future database technology led to his decision to join.

Goals of ClickHouse Labs

ClickHouse Labs aims to be a leading industry research organization for databases. It will operate in close collaboration with ClickHouse engineers, customers, collaborators, and industry partners. The objective is to develop and disseminate new ideas to maintain ClickHouse's position in the database field.

Support for PostgreSQL Efforts

Beyond its core focus, ClickHouse Labs will also work with ClickHouse's PostgreSQL team.
