Apple hires American Airlines executive Nate Gatten as VP of Government Affairs

Apple has announced the appointment of Nate Gatten as its new Vice President of Government Affairs. Gatten, who previously served as a veteran executive at American Airlines, will assume his new role on August 31. He will report directly to Jennifer Newstead, Apple’s Senior Vice President and General Counsel.

Background and Context

This appointment follows a period of transition in Apple's government affairs leadership. Lisa Jackson, who previously headed the organization and oversaw environmental and social initiatives, retired late last year. Following her departure, legal chief Katherine Adams served as the company’s senior vice president of government affairs on an interim basis, with plans to retire in late 2026.

Strategic Alignment and Experience

According to reports, Apple sought a candidate who could align with the current political administration. Gatten, a Republican, is expected to work closely with Tim Cook, who will remain involved in engaging with policymakers as executive chairman after stepping down as CEO. Gatten's prior experience includes roles at JPMorgan Chase and Fannie Mae, in addition to his recent tenure at American Airlines, where he led government affairs since 2017. His experience in real estate is also noted as potentially beneficial for Apple's retail expansion.
