Autodafe Releases Vintage Emulator Studio, a Free MAME-Powered Synth Plugin

New Vintage Synthesizer Plugin Released

Audio software maker Autodafe has released the Vintage Emulator Studio (VES), a new, free plugin for musicians and synth enthusiasts. This plugin integrates numerous open-source MAME emulator synthesizer cores into a single package.

Component-Level Emulation for Accuracy

VES differentiates itself by employing full component-level emulation, powered by MAME. This means that each processor, tone generator, envelope generator, filter chip, and converter is reproduced, aiming for a faithful emulation of the original hardware's sound. This approach contrasts with other plugins that might use facsimiles or hybrid emulation methods.

For machines with advanced MAME emulation, analog and digital output stages are recreated, eliminating the need for additional filters to achieve authentic sound. The user interface also replicates the original units' control panels, dials, buttons, and LCD displays.

Included Iconic Synthesizers

The plugin includes 44 machines, such as the Akai MPC3000, LinnDrum, Oberheim DMX, and Roland TR-707. These instruments were used by artists like Dr. Dre, New Order, The Police, INXS, and Prince.

Considerations for Use

Users will need to provide their own ROM/firmware and associated sample packs, which can be a legal gray area if the original hardware is not owned. The plugin may also have high CPU usage due to the detailed component simulation.
