Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced its acquisition of DuckLabs, the company responsible for the popular open-source analytical database DuckDB. The acquisition is expected to be finalized in early September. This move brings the DuckLabs team and their expertise into AWS.

Open-Source Commitment

A key aspect of the acquisition is the commitment to maintaining the open-source nature of DuckDB and its related projects, including DuckLake and Quack. These components of the "Duck Stack" will continue to be free and open source under the MIT license. The nonprofit DuckDB Foundation will retain its role in stewarding these projects, ensuring their independence and community involvement.

Team Integration and Resources

The entire DuckLabs team will join AWS and will continue to operate from their current location in Amsterdam. This integration is intended to provide the DuckDB projects with increased resources and broader reach, enabling further development and wider adoption within the developer community and various organizations. DuckLabs stated that joining AWS will allow them to pursue ideas at a scale that would have been difficult to achieve independently.

Background and Growth

DuckLabs was founded five years ago to support the DuckDB project, which has seen significant growth, with over one million daily downloads. The company initially chose a bootstrapped model, allowing it to prioritize technology development. However, the founders recognized that the project's rapid growth might eventually outpace their ability to support it as a small company, leading to concerns about becoming a bottleneck for the project and its community.
