Carbon Open-Source ERP/MES/QMS Released for Manufacturing, CMMC Compliance

Open-Source Manufacturing System Release

Carbon, a new open-source system encompassing Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP), Manufacturing Execution System (MES), and Quality Management System (QMS) functionalities, has been released. The system is built on Postgres and designed for self-hosting, allowing deployment on-premise, within a Virtual Private Cloud (VPC), or in air-gapped environments.

CMMC Compliance and Data Sovereignty

A key feature of Carbon is its focus on CMMC (Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification) compliance, particularly for defense and aerospace manufacturers handling Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI). By enabling self-hosting, Carbon ensures that production records remain within the user's CMMC boundary, preventing sensitive data from being transferred to third-party clouds. Enterprise deployments include support for SSP, POA&M, and SPRS inputs required by assessors.

Comprehensive Manufacturing Operations

Carbon provides a unified ledger for managing manufacturing operations, from a single shop to multi-national enterprises. It supports per-entity currency, chart of accounts, tax, consolidated books, and inter-site transfers, all within the user's network. The system also offers full traceability, allowing users to track serial numbers and their genealogy, including material certifications, operator data, measurements, and deviations, all stored behind the user's firewall.

Shop Floor Integration and Deployment Flexibility

The system integrates with the shop floor through digital travelers, operator terminals, barcode tracking, and finite-capacity scheduling, all executing against the self-hosted Carbon instance without cloud dependency. Carbon utilizes a single codebase that can run from a Docker host to a multi-region cloud deployment, offering deployment flexibility without proprietary runtimes or vendor lock-in. The Community edition is available under AGPL-3.0, with Enterprise features accessible via a commercial license.
