Caterpillar is expanding its artificial intelligence deployments by applying lessons learned from decades of automating mining operations. The company's experience in integrating automation into physical environments is now being used to address the challenges of deploying AI in various industrial settings.

AI Tools for Field Operations

One example of this broader AI application is the Cat AI Assistant. This tool allows field technicians to use voice commands to access repair procedures, troubleshoot problems, and identify necessary parts while working on machines. The assistant is currently in use by customers, operators, and technicians.

Data and Enterprise Integration

The Cat AI Assistant utilizes Caterpillar's proprietary data, which includes information from its 1.6 million connected assets globally and over 16 petabytes of structured data. Beyond field tools, Caterpillar is also using AI for site scanning, generating digital twins for manufacturing analysis, and across its enterprise operations. This includes using AI agents for modernizing legacy code, generating and testing new software, and identifying defects earlier in the development cycle.

Beyond Technology Development

Caterpillar's CTO, Jaime Mineart, noted that building the technology is only one aspect of AI deployment. The company emphasizes that successful integration requires rethinking how people interact with the technology and adapting existing processes to accommodate AI-driven changes.
