Custom Home Server Built from Spare Parts to Avoid Cloud Storage Fees

Motivation for Local Storage

The user decided to build a home server due to persistent notifications from cloud providers about full storage accounts and the desire to avoid ongoing subscription fees for personal data. The goal was to create a private, automatic backup solution for family files and pictures, and a machine for continuous downloads.

Hardware Selection and Modifications

The core of the server is a Zotac MAGNUS EN1070K, which features an i5 processor and a GTX 1070 GPU. This unit was chosen for its existing components and ability to handle tasks like video transcoding and running small local models. The primary challenge was the Zotac's single 2.5-inch drive bay, which required a custom-designed, 3D-printed extension to house additional storage.

The extension integrates an ICY Dock five-bay hot-swap cage and a printed holder for a sixth drive. Power is supplied by a Pico PSU connected to the Zotac's upgraded power brick via a DC-DC converter, accommodating the power draw of six spinning drives. An ASM1166 adapter in the M.2 slot provides six SATA ports, with the boot SSD relocated to the original 2.5-inch bay.

Utilizing Spare Parts

Most of the remaining components were sourced from existing spare parts. This included two DDR4 RAM sticks from an old laptop, bringing the memory to 32 GB, and an SSD for booting the system. A WiFi card from a previous project replaced the original. The only new purchases were the drive cage, the SATA adapter, and the six hard drives themselves.
