Former Brightly Software Analyst Sentenced to Prison for Data Theft and Extortion

Contractor Sentenced for Extortion Scheme

Cameron Curry, a 27-year-old former data analyst contractor for Brightly Software, has been sentenced to two years in prison. Curry was found guilty in March of orchestrating an extensive cyber extortion scheme against his former employer, Brightly Software, an asset management and maintenance software provider.

Data Theft and Extortion Demands

After learning his six-month contract would not be extended, Curry gained unauthorized access to Brightly Software's payroll information and corporate data. He subsequently used this stolen information to extort the company, demanding $2.5 million in cryptocurrency to prevent the data from being leaked. Curry sent emails to dozens of Brightly employees, threatening to disseminate salary information and report the company to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for failing to disclose a breach.

Compromised Information and Ransom Payment

The stolen data included employees' personally identifiable information (PII), such as names, dates of birth, home addresses, and compensation details. In response to the threats, Brightly Software transferred $7,540 in Bitcoin to a cryptocurrency wallet controlled by Curry. The company then reported the incident to law enforcement.

FBI Investigation and Conviction

Following the report, the FBI searched Curry's residence and seized electronic devices containing evidence linking him to the extortion scheme. His conviction in March led to the recent two-year prison sentence, concluding the legal proceedings related to the cyber extortion attempt.
