Former Replit GC Cecilia Ziniti Launches GC AI for Legal Work

From General Counsel to Founder

Cecilia Ziniti, who previously served as General Counsel at Replit, has transitioned from her legal career to launch a new startup, GC AI. Her decision was driven by an early exposure to generative AI technologies and a recognition of their potential application in the legal field.

Ziniti spent two decades as a lawyer at companies including Amazon, Cruise, and Anki. Despite her non-technical background, her time at Replit provided insight into the development of AI-powered coding products.

Identifying a Gap in AI for Legal Use

While at Replit in late 2021 and early 2022, Ziniti gained access to an early version of OpenAI's GPT before its public release. This experience led her to consider how the technology could be applied to legal tasks.

She later taught classes on using ChatGPT for legal work, where she observed a significant disconnect. General-purpose chatbots often lacked the precision, proper sourcing, and appropriate tone required for professional legal applications.

Developing a Tailored Solution

Ziniti noted an instance where ChatGPT's response to a legal research query, while covering relevant issues, included informal language unsuitable for a professional legal context. This highlighted the need for AI models specifically designed to meet the stringent requirements of the legal profession.

Recognizing this gap, Ziniti decided to build GC AI to address these specific product requirements. She collaborated with Bardia Pourvakil, an engineer from Replit with prior experience in GPT development, to bring her vision to fruition.
