Google has acquired a significant dataset from the bankrupt Spirit Airlines for $10 million. This purchase is part of Google's ongoing effort to secure diverse data for training its artificial intelligence models.

The acquisition includes various types of enterprise data, such as operational information, business records, and software code, which Google stated would be helpful in improving its products and AI models.

Details of the Dataset

The acquired data is extensive, comprising hundreds of millions of Microsoft Teams chats, over 100 million emails, and information related to revenue, aircraft operations, employee productivity, audits, and fraud. It also includes data on marketing campaigns, human resources, strategy, project management, pricing from over 7 billion competitor flights, and approximately 7.5 billion passenger transaction records spanning nearly two decades.

Crucially, Google confirmed that all personally identifiable information (PII) will be rigorously scrubbed by a third party before the data is received. This means the dataset will not contain passenger profiles or loyalty program details.

Context of Spirit Airlines' Closure

Spirit Airlines, a low-cost U.S. carrier, ceased operations earlier this year due to financial difficulties exacerbated by rising fuel costs. The airline's assets are currently being auctioned off as part of bankruptcy proceedings, leading to Google's acquisition of its data.
