Google iOS apps adopt Liquid Glass and Material 3 Expressive design elements

Design Update for iOS Apps

Google is integrating its Liquid Glass translucent material and Material 3 Expressive design language into its iOS applications. This update affects elements like bottom bars and buttons, providing a more modern visual experience for users.

The transition marks a shift from the previous Google Material Theme design language, which is still present in some applications like Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Keep.

Liquid Glass Implementation

Google Photos on iOS, starting with version 7.94, now features a Liquid Glass floating bottom bar, replacing the previous solid background. Users can adjust the translucency level to be 'Default' or 'More clear'.

Google Health's traditional bottom bar has also been updated with Liquid Glass, allowing underlying content to be visible. The 'Ask Coach' Floating Action Button (FAB) in Google Health now has a frosted appearance.

Material 3 Expressive Rollout

The Material 3 Expressive design language is being progressively implemented across Google's iOS app suite. This update includes changes to top bar buttons, aligning the visual style with Google's current design standards.

While many apps are receiving these updates, some, such as Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Keep, are still awaiting the Material 3 Expressive design integration. Google Tasks recently received its update.

Dynamic Color Not Included

Google has not indicated plans to add Dynamic Color functionality to its iOS applications. Dynamic Color, which typically adapts app themes based on system wallpaper, is primarily a system-level feature on Android and would require system access to wallpaper on iOS to function effectively.
