Platform Shift for Google Meet Hardware

Google announced a transition of its Google Meet hardware portfolio from ChromeOS to Android. This change affects the underlying operating system for devices like touchscreen controllers, cameras, microphones, speakers, and compute systems used in video conferencing setups.

Continued Support for ChromeOS Devices

Current investments in ChromeOS-based Google Meet hardware are protected. Google will continue to provide security patches, stability updates, and ChromeOS releases for these devices. Support timelines remain unchanged, with hardware continuing to function until 2030 for recent models.

Hardware partners such as Logitech, CTL, and Asus will gradually cease manufacturing and sales of ChromeOS-based hardware. Logitech and CTL Google Meet Compute Systems will end by February 2027, and ASUS Google Meet Compute Systems by April 2027.

Benefits of Android Migration

The move to Android for Google Meet hardware is intended to provide several benefits. These include a broader range of device form factors, such as compact all-in-one devices and video bars, suitable for various room sizes. Android-based devices are also expected to deliver enterprise stability, performance, and responsiveness.

Additionally, certified AOSP devices will gain hardware flexibility, allowing them to run multiple video conferencing solutions. This enables repurposing rooms without replacing equipment. Google also states that certified devices are engineered for long-term reliability and predictable software support.

Future Android Devices

Google plans to release several Android devices for large-format spaces in 2027, indicating future hardware developments aligned with this platform shift.
