Google has integrated its Call Screen feature with Android Auto, enabling phones to screen incoming calls from unknown numbers while a user is driving. This functionality aims to minimize distractions by preventing spam or unwanted calls from appearing on the Android Auto dashboard, allowing drivers to focus on the road.

How Call Screen Functions

Call Screen can operate in two modes: manual and automatic. In manual mode, users can choose to screen a call, prompting Call Assist to ask the caller for their identity and purpose, with a live transcript displayed. Automatic screening, available on supported Pixel phones, allows Call Assist to silently screen certain unknown or suspicious calls, hanging up if identified as spam or ringing through with caller information if legitimate.

Reducing Driver Distraction

The automatic screening feature is particularly relevant for drivers, as it handles initial call interactions without requiring driver input. This means the phone can determine the nature of an incoming call before the driver needs to decide whether to answer, thereby reducing potential distractions behind the wheel. Google states that Call Screen operates on the device itself, without requiring Wi-Fi or mobile data, and call audio and transcripts are not saved to Google accounts.

Setup and Device Compatibility

Call Screen is configured within the Phone by Google app, not directly in Android Auto. Users access settings through the Phone app to enable and customize Call Screen. On Pixel 7 and newer models, automatic screening offers protection levels for spam, potentially faked numbers, and first-time callers. Older models like the Pixel 6 use 'Unknown call settings' to manage screening preferences. Using Phone by Google as the default calling app brings these smart calling features into the car via Android Auto.
