GrapheneOS Messages app rewritten with Jetpack Compose and Material 3

Major UI Overhaul

GrapheneOS has released version 13 of its Messages application, featuring a complete rewrite of the user interface. The legacy interface has been replaced with Jetpack Compose and Material 3, bringing a modern design and improved user experience. This update rebuilds every screen within the application.

Enhanced Conversation Management

The new version introduces several conversation control features. Users can now pin conversations, snooze notifications for various durations, and mark conversations as unread. Multi-select actions for archiving, deletion, blocking, and notifications have been redesigned, and quick actions are available from conversation avatars.

Improved Message Handling and Media

Version 13 includes rebuilt message bubbles, grouping, selection, and link handling. Users can select multiple messages for deletion and view full-screen message details. The media picker has been rewritten to include photo and video capture, flash controls, and Android's embedded photo picker, alongside a redesigned audio recording interface.

Large-Screen and System Integration

The update adds specific support for large screens, including a two-pane conversation layout. It also addresses correct display cutout and system bar handling in both orientations. SIM fallback now uses the system default, and emergency numbers cannot be dialed directly from conversations, enhancing system integration and safety.
