IEEE International Leadership Conference to Address Transition from Tech Expert to Leader

Inaugural IEEE Leadership Conference Announced

The IEEE will host its first International Leadership Conference (ILC) on October 3 and 4 in Budapest. This event is designed to assist senior technical experts and professionals in their transition to leadership positions within STEM careers. Registration for the conference is currently open.

Focus on Legacy Leadership

The conference will introduce and explore the concept of "legacy leadership." This philosophy redefines success for senior leaders, shifting the metric from personal technical accomplishments to the effectiveness with which they empower and mentor others. It encourages leaders to make strategic decisions for their organizations and collaborate across generations.

Shifting Mindset from Expert to Enabler

According to Jeewika Ranaweera, cochair of the IEEE ILC program committee, the transition involves moving from measuring success by individual achievements to measuring it by the number of people mentored, knowledge transferred, and opportunities created for the next generation. This requires letting go of the sole identity of a technical expert and embracing a role focused on influence and enabling others' success.

Sudhanshu S. Jamuar, another program committee cochair, emphasizes that a professional legacy is built by sharing knowledge and opportunities, rather than solely by personal accomplishments. The shift involves asking how many others can be enabled to achieve more, rather than focusing on personal achievements.

Neeli Rashmi Prasad, IEEE ILC treasurer and sponsorship cochair, noted that this transition transforms a lifetime of technical work into a platform for future innovation. The value of experience is seen in the intentional transfer of knowledge, through mentoring and creating space for others to grow and contribute.
