Akilan and Miguel, creators of MarbleOS, are exploring a new graphical user interface (GUI) for AI agents. Their inspiration draws from historical GUI developments like Xerox PARC, the 1984 Macintosh, and NeXTSTEP, which made computer capabilities visible and easier to use compared to command-line interfaces. They argue that current AI interactions, despite using natural language, still resemble a command-line stage where users must recall specific commands, syntax, and parameters.

Limitations of Chat-Based AI

While platforms like ChatGPT excel at answering questions, MarbleOS identifies limitations in delegating complex work across multiple files, websites, tools, and agents using a blank text box and chat threads. The current model often hides the system's capabilities and the structure of a task, requiring users to know what the AI can do, which tools to use, and how to phrase tasks effectively.

MarbleOS: A Workspace Approach

MarbleOS proposes an interface that treats AI more like a workspace than a chat application. In this model, each delegated task becomes a visible card, allowing multiple jobs to run concurrently. Files, tools, and finished artifacts are displayed together, and the system shows which tools it expects to use before a task begins. This design aims to reduce the cognitive load on users by making the task structure visible.

Focus on Usable Outputs

A core idea behind MarbleOS is to produce directly usable results, such as spreadsheets, PDFs, or slide decks, rather than burying outcomes within chat transcripts. The product is intended for users already familiar with AI tools like ChatGPT or Claude, who are looking to adopt more advanced agent workflows but are seeking a more intuitive interaction model.
