What is `_for-sale`?

`_for-sale` is a new reserved DNS leaf node name, specified in RFC 10023 (Informational, July 2026) and registered with IANA. It enables a domain owner to publish a TXT record at `_for-sale.example.com` to indicate that `example.com` is available for purchase, even while the domain is actively resolving and in use.

Distinction from Domain Parking and WHOIS

Unlike domain parking, which replaces a live site with a sales page, `_for-sale` operates alongside a functional website. The homepage continues to serve content, and email services remain active. This DNS record does not affect browser behavior and can be added or removed as needed, ensuring the domain remains operational during the sales process.

This mechanism also differs from WHOIS or RDAP data, which only confirm if a name is registered. `_for-sale` addresses the gap where a registered domain might be purchasable, providing a direct signal that current registration data cannot. It is primarily designed for domain brokers and automated availability services rather than individual users.

Why This Matters for Domain Sales

Previously, domain owners willing to sell lacked a clear channel to communicate this intent, often relying on unsolicited emails to WHOIS contacts that are frequently redacted for privacy. This new DNS signal allows interested buyers, particularly brokers and availability services, to discover domains for sale efficiently.

Placing this signal in DNS makes it externally verifiable and accessible to parties who can act on it. It requires only one additional lookup for services already checking domain resolution, without impacting the live website or exposing sensitive information, offering a low-risk method for owners to indicate sales availability.

Implementation Details

To implement, a domain owner publishes a single TXT record at the `_for-sale` leaf of their zone. This record includes a mandatory version tag (`v=FORSALE1`) and can optionally include a free text message (`ftxt`), a URI for negotiation (`furi` supporting https, mailto, and tel schemes), or an asking price (`fv` with uppercase currency code and amount).
