Addressing High Installation Costs

Many potential electric vehicle buyers are hesitant due to the significant cost of upgrading home electrical services to accommodate EV chargers. Studies indicate that upgrading electrical panels can more than double the total installation cost for a charger.

Noble Carbon's Smart Breaker Solution

Noble Carbon, a startup based in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, has developed circuit breakers that manage electricity delivery in real time. These breakers allow EV chargers, heat pumps, or induction stoves to operate within existing electrical panel capacities, circumventing the need for expensive panel upgrades.

The company's head of marketing, Spencer Fields, stated that home electrical panels are typically designed for peak usage that occurs only a few hours per year. Noble Carbon's smart breakers reduce power to controlled devices during high demand, ensuring the panel's capacity is not exceeded.

Product Development and Certification

Co-founder and CEO Jared Lebos, inspired by rolling blackouts in South Africa, developed the product with co-founder and CTO Andrew Crane. The breakers fit into existing panel slots and are reported to install in under five minutes. The product is currently undergoing evaluation for UL certification, a recognized electrical safety standard.

TechCrunch Disrupt Participation

Noble Carbon is one of 200 startups participating in this year’s TechCrunch Startup Battlefield at TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco. Twenty finalists from this competition will present on the main stage in October. The company is also partnering with the utility Eversource for installations.
