Office Commun Releases "Search," a Minimalist WebKit Browser for macOS

Introduction of Search Browser

Office Commun has launched "Search," a new web browser specifically for macOS. The browser is designed to be small, fast, and quiet, focusing on a minimalist user experience. It is available for free download and is compatible with macOS 14 or later, with a small file size of approximately 3 MB.

WebKit Integration and Performance

Search leverages WebKit, the same rendering engine used by Safari and already present on every Mac. This integration contributes to the browser's small footprint and instant launch times, as it avoids the need to download and maintain a separate browser engine like Chromium. The design prioritizes core browsing functionality over extensive features.

Key Features and User Experience

The browser features a single input field for both addresses and search queries. It includes an ad blocker that operates at the network level, preventing third-party trackers and ad networks from loading. Other features include a reading mode, the ability to hide persistent page elements like cookie banners, and a picture-in-picture video mode. Password management is integrated with the macOS Keychain, offering secure storage and import options from other browsers.

Design Philosophy

Search was developed by a design studio aiming to create a browser that functions purely as a tool, without the distractions often found in more feature-rich browsers. Its interface is minimal, offering tab management options and quick access to bookmarks, history, and downloads through searchable panels.
