PitPro Automation deploys first robotic tire-changing system in Calgary, Canada

First Robotic System Deployment

San Francisco-based startup PitPro Automation has deployed its first automatic tire-changing system at a Kal Tire shop in Calgary, Alberta. Kal Tire is one of Canada's largest independent tire service chains. This marks the first operational installation of PitPro's robotic technology, which was initially revealed last year.

System Capabilities and Design

The PitPro system is designed to change a full set of four tires in under 15 minutes. It consists of two oven-sized robots that use sensors and robotic arms to locate and loosen lug nuts, remove and store them, and then replace wheels with new or rotated tires. The system is built to integrate into existing maintenance bays, allowing mechanics to use the bay for other tasks.

Addressing Labor Shortages

PitPro's CEO, Jeremy Conrad, stated that the tire service industry faces significant labor shortages, with high turnover rates for tire-changing positions. The robotic system aims to mitigate these challenges by automating the physically demanding task of tire changing, which can help shops retain staff and maintain service levels.

Market Focus and Future Plans

While PitPro has primarily focused on deploying its robots with commercial fleets, the company also sees significant opportunity in tire chains due to standardized layouts and the constant demand for tire changes. Canada, in particular, presents a strong market due to the annual requirement for winter tire changes. PitPro is targeting larger chains over smaller shops for wider deployment potential.
