The account, which had been inactive since his death in 2014, was reactivated with the stated purpose of creating a "safe, trusted place where the stories, photos, videos, and memories shared reflect his legacy with authenticity, warmth, and care."

Combating AI Abuse

The primary motivation behind reactivating the account is to combat "rampant AI abuse" of Robin Williams' voice and likeness. Zelda Williams previously expressed frustration over AI-generated videos of her father, noting that such content often reduces legacies to vague resemblances and can be used for "horrible TikTok slop puppeteering."

By providing authentic clips and photos, the family aims to counteract unauthorized AI-generated content that misrepresents his image and voice.

Industry-Wide Concerns

The issue of AI misuse extends beyond individual cases. Despite some AI chatbots having restrictions against generating celebrity likenesses, these guardrails can often be bypassed. Examples include OpenAI's now-shuttered Sora app being used for copyrighted characters and celebrities, and Grok generating sexualized AI deepfakes.

ByteDance's AI model, Seedance, also faced issues with lax guardrails, leading to an agreement with the Motion Picture Association. Bad actors have also exploited AI likenesses of celebrities like Taylor Swift and Rihanna for scam promotion on platforms like TikTok.
