SiFive Enters Server Market with BigSky Platform

SiFive, a prominent company in the RISC-V ecosystem, has launched its first server platform, the BigSky SF-2U870. This release signifies SiFive's expansion into the high-performance application class silicon space, offering a complete server solution rather than just individual chips.

Platform Specifications and Features

The BigSky SF-2U870 platform is a standard 19-inch 2U server. It is equipped with 32 P870-D cores running at 2.2 GHz, 256 GB of DDR5-5600 memory, and 64 lanes of PCIe 5.0, alongside 4 lanes of PCIe Gen 3.0. The system also supports double-wide GPUs up to 450W, includes a 10/25 GbE OCP 3.0 NIC, a 960 GB SATA SSD for the operating system, and a 3.84 TB U.2 NVMe SSD for data storage.

RVA23 Standard and Software Compatibility

A key feature of the BigSky platform is its support for the RVA23 standard, which includes RVV support. This compliance is crucial as it enables the platform to run Ubuntu 26.04 directly, simplifying development and deployment for users. This out-of-the-box operating system compatibility addresses a common challenge in new hardware ecosystems.

Competitive Positioning

When compared to existing server processors, the BigSky SF-2U870's SoC is similar to Intel's Xeon 6532P-B in core count, base clock, and memory subsystem. However, BigSky offers more PCIe lanes and potentially lower power consumption. While it may not surpass AMD EPYC 8325P in all specifications, its entry into the server market with RVA23 support positions RISC-V as a viable alternative for server infrastructure.
