At the FOSSY 2026 conference, representatives from the Software Freedom Conservancy (SFC), including Bradley Kühn, Karen Sandler, and Denver Gingerich, discussed an ongoing violation of the Affero General Public License version 3 (AGPLv3). The violation involves 3D printer software developed by Bambu Lab.

Circumvention of License Intent

A key aspect of the reported violation is that Bambu Lab's methods for circumventing the license are specifically what the AGPL was created to prevent. The SFC is actively working to develop and provide alternative solutions for users affected by this issue.

Bradley Kühn noted that the current period presents significant opportunities for activism within the free and open-source software (FOSS) communities. Over the past six to eight months, the SFC has shifted its focus from addressing problems to capitalizing on these opportunities, engaging a community of 3D printing enthusiasts who previously had limited familiarity with FOSS principles.

Kühn, despite not being a participant in 3D printing himself, has observed its evolution. He and Gingerich conducted research into the history of 3D printing as part of their investigation into the license violation. The hobbyist 3D printing field began with individuals building their own printers, leading some to found companies in the sector.
