SpaceXAI has introduced a 50% discount on Starlink internet services for residents in Memphis, Tennessee, and neighboring Southaven, Mississippi. The company also announced it is waiving the upfront hardware cost for the Starlink V5 rental kit across all plans, which can save users up to $349. This promotion applies to all three Starlink residential tiers: 100 Mbps, 200 Mbps, and Max.

Community Backlash and Environmental Concerns

This discount program comes amidst significant community backlash regarding SpaceXAI's data centers in Memphis. Critics have raised concerns about the deployment of unpermitted power turbines, which have been cited for emitting pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, fine particulate matter, and formaldehyde. Environmental groups are calling for the shutdown of these unpermitted power sources.

Company Response and Future Plans

SpaceXAI has committed to removing all 69 of its unpermitted generators. However, the company stated this removal process would occur over a one-year period, coinciding with the activation of its new 1.2 GW power plant. The discount is also being offered in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, where SpaceX plans to build a new spaceport.

With the 50% discount, Starlink's cheapest 100 Mbps plan becomes $27.50 per month, making it more affordable than some fiber-based competitors like AT&T and Xfinity, which typically start at $35-$40. While competitors offer higher speeds, the discounted Starlink service provides a viable option for areas lacking fiber access or as a backup internet solution, according to some local residents.
