The Game Band Launches Dartwords, a New Daily Word Guessing Game

The Game Band, known for developing Blaseball, has released a new daily word game called Dartwords. The game is available on the web starting today. Dartwords is a word guessing game where players attempt to identify a secret word within 10 guesses.

Gameplay Mechanics

In Dartwords, players begin with no hints and type in any word. A character named Darty, reminiscent of Clippy, provides clues based on the player's guess. For example, if a player guesses an animal, Darty might indicate the answer is larger or manmade. Each guess is visually represented by a dart hitting a board, moving closer to the bullseye as the player approaches the correct answer.

Conversational Clues with LLM

Sam Rosenthal, creative director at The Game Band, stated that Dartwords aims for a more conversational experience than other daily puzzle games. To achieve this, the studio developed a bespoke hint engine utilizing a local LLM trained on the English dictionary. Darty's clues combine broader hints from the LLM with developer-written clues that appear as players get closer to the correct word.

AI and Development Practices

Rosenthal clarified that all art and UI/UX in Dartwords are handmade. While the studio uses tools like Claude Code to accelerate coding tasks, these are paired with human judgment and careful reviews. The integration of a local LLM for hint generation represents a specific application of AI in the game's design.
