Thieves swap RTX 5080 GPUs for RTX 3060s in Chinese gaming hotels, stealing $12,000

GPU Swapping Scheme Uncovered

Two individuals in China engaged in a scheme to swap high-end graphics cards in gaming hotel PCs. They would check into rooms, remove the installed RTX 5080 or 5070 GPUs, and replace them with less powerful RTX 3060 cards. The lower-end GPUs were visually similar enough that the changes went unnoticed by hotel staff and subsequent customers.

Discovery Triggered by Power Outage

The theft was discovered after an unexpected power outage on July 18. While the thieves were in the process of swapping GPUs, the power went out, prompting them to request a new room. An electrician later noticed pry marks on the PC cases in their original room. Upon inspection, hotel management found RTX 3060s installed instead of the expected RTX 5080s, confirming the theft.

Arrest and Previous Incidents

Local police apprehended the suspects two days later in the Guangbutun computer district, tracing them through hotel registration details. The investigation revealed that the individuals specifically targeted hotels with high-end systems to steal GPUs for resale. They admitted to having successfully executed this scheme four times prior to their arrest.

Financial Impact of the Thefts

The stolen RTX 5080 GPUs, valued at approximately $1,400 each, were replaced with RTX 3060s, which cost around $400. The thieves reportedly sold the stolen GPUs for about half their market value, around $700. The total financial loss from their GPU-swapping activities was reported to be 80,000 Yuan, equivalent to nearly $12,000.
