Mithril Defense's Campus Guardian Angel drones are scheduled for deployment in at least nine schools across Florida, Georgia, and Colorado before the end of the year. This initiative, reported by The Washington Post, marks the introduction of armed drones into US school security measures. The pilot program will operate in schools with and without resource officers.

System Functionality and Capabilities

The Campus Guardian Angel drones are designed to be triggered by teachers using an app or panic button. Once activated, remote pilots take control, guiding the drones to distract, deter, and disable aggressors. The drones are equipped with strobes, sirens, pepper gel, and can impact attackers at speeds up to 60 mph. Mithril Defense states the drones can reach a shooter within 15 seconds of activation.

Funding and Context

The rollout involves significant investment; for instance, five schools in Georgia will receive $500,000 in backing for the pilot program. This deployment comes in response to the ongoing issue of gun violence in US schools, with nearly 400,000 students experiencing gun violence since 1999. Mithril's CEO, Justin Marston, suggested the drones could have saved lives in incidents like the Uvalde massacre, emphasizing the critical nature of the first 120 seconds of an attack.

Criticism and Concerns

The school-based drone systems have drawn criticism. Some argue that the funds allocated for these drones might be more effectively spent on preventative measures rather than reactive solutions. The effectiveness of such systems in real-world scenarios, particularly within narrow time windows, remains a point of discussion.
