AI Bootcamps Launched for Unemployed Youth

The UK government has initiated a pilot program of AI bootcamps in the North-West, specifically targeting young people aged 16 to 24 who are not in education, employment, or training (NEETs). These bootcamps are designed to provide AI training and address the challenge of youth unemployment in the region.

The program is currently being trialed in locations like Preston, with sessions focusing on practical AI skills, such as understanding data importance in AI models.

Addressing Youth Unemployment with AI Skills

Youth unemployment remains a significant issue in the UK, with nearly a million young people classified as NEETs. The government's initiative seeks to leverage AI as a solution rather than a contributor to job market challenges, by equipping young individuals with in-demand technological competencies.

Participants like 18-year-old Khudeija Rafique express optimism about the potential of AI skills for their future careers.

Program Structure and Apprenticeship Opportunities

These taxpayer-funded bootcamps are a three-week program for 70 participants, focusing on building AI tools, understanding business applications of AI, and responsible technology use. The IN4 Group is contracted to run the program.

Upon completion, trainees can pursue AI apprenticeships with partner companies such as retailer JD Sports, food company Heinz, and IT firm Agilysys. These apprenticeships include roles like AI marketing specialists for content creators and IT helpdesk positions requiring AI expertise.

Bridging the Skills Gap

The program aims to bridge the skills gap in the workforce and improve productivity by integrating AI expertise into organizations. It offers an opportunity for young people to gain an advantage in a competitive job market, particularly amid concerns about the availability of entry-level jobs and the impact of AI on employment.
