Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukraine conducted a strike on the Progress Rocket Space Center in Russia's Samara region. The attack utilized ground-launched cruise missiles, specifically identified as "Flamingo missiles."

The Progress Center is a significant enterprise within Roscosmos, Russia's state space corporation. It is responsible for electronics production, as well as the manufacturing of rockets and military satellites.

Strategic Importance of the Target

Located in Samara, approximately 900 km from the Ukrainian border, the Progress Center is Russia's most important rocket manufacturer. It assembles the Soyuz-2 vehicle, a workhorse for Russia's space program, and the newer Soyuz-5 rocket. The facility also produces military satellites.

The Soyuz-2 rocket is crucial for both civil and military applications, including human spacecraft launches to the International Space Station, with a lift capacity of about 8 metric tons to low-Earth orbit.

Potential Impact on Russian Space Capabilities

The extent of the damage to the sprawling Progress facility is not yet fully clear. However, open-source reports suggest a missile may have hit a building housing a clean room for avionics, potentially related to the electronics production mentioned by Zelenskyy.
