Sony headphones now serve as real-time head tracker for PC games

Introduction to Sony Head Tracker

Nicholas Slattery has launched an open-source app named 'Sony Head Tracker' that allows users to utilize specific Sony headphones as real-time head trackers for PC gaming. This app connects the headphones' internal sensors to game software, enhancing the gaming experience beyond traditional audio capabilities.

How the App Works

The Sony headphones come equipped with gyroscopes and accelerometers, designed for spatial audio capabilities. Slattery's app acts as a bridge, reading the Android Head Tracker protocol embedded in the headphones' firmware, which captures real-time sensor data including rotation vectors and Euler Angles.

The data is transmitted through a UDP stream compatible with OpenTrack software, enabling head tracking functionality in compatible games.

Game Compatibility and User Experience

Currently, the app is compatible with select Sony models such as the WH/WF-1000XM6 and WH/WF-1000XM5, while older versions lack the necessary sensors. The system works well with over 200 games, providing an immersive experience where in-game cameras respond to head movements.

Although not a replacement for VR headsets, the app supports enhanced gameplay in simulations like Microsoft Flight Simulator, Elite Dangerous, and Assetto Corsa.
