AI Enters Massachusetts Senate Race

Artificial intelligence has emerged as a prominent topic in the Massachusetts Democratic Senate primary. The election pits six-term House member Rep. Seth Moulton against incumbent Sen. Ed Markey, who is seeking his third full term.

Candidate Stances and Campaign Tactics

Moulton has highlighted Markey's recent admission of not knowing if he uses AI on personal devices, using it to advocate for a "new generation of leaders." Markey, a long-time progressive, has introduced an "AI Accountability Agenda," while Moulton, a moderate, calls for federal AI regulations that keep companies in the U.S.

AI Industry Funding Campaigns

The AI industry is actively funding campaigns in this election. Federal Election Commission filings show Public First Action, an Anthropic-backed nonprofit, donated $500,000 to Commonwealth Together, a PAC supporting Markey. Public First Action stated its support for Markey is due to his "unequivocal support for regulating AI." Anthropic has contributed $20 million to Public First Action. Another AI PAC, Leading the Future, backed by Andreessen Horowitz, has also spent heavily on candidates nationally, though not yet in Massachusetts.

Broader Trend of AI in Elections

The involvement of AI and its associated data center infrastructure in political campaigns is a recurring theme in elections this year. Corporate money from the AI sector has flowed into both sides of the Massachusetts primary, with Moulton's supportive PAC, Advance Progress, receiving backing from financial figures like former Bain Capital co-chair Josh Bekenstein.
