Floating Island Appears, Vanishes, and Reappears on Williston Lake, British Columbia

Mysterious Appearance and Disappearance

A substantial floating island, composed of trees and vegetation and measuring about 230 feet by 460 feet, was observed on Williston Lake in British Columbia. After its initial sighting and a viral video by local resident Rocky Avery, the island seemingly vanished from satellite imagery taken in early August, prompting a search.

BC Hydro spokesperson Bob Gammer initially suspected AI manipulation of the video but confirmed the island's authenticity through satellite images from July 21, which showed it drifting about 60 miles west of the W.A.C. Bennett Dam. Its subsequent disappearance from August 5th satellite images led to its rediscovery approximately 20 miles northwest of its previous location.

Formation and Movement Explained

Floating islands are not a new phenomenon globally, forming over many years as driftwood rafts accumulate plants and trees. These platforms can detach from shorelines due to conditions like stormy weather or flooded shores, allowing them to float freely.

Williston Lake, a reservoir created by the W.A.C. Bennett Dam, experienced high water levels in June and July for the first time in 14 years, following significant snowpack and precipitation. These elevated water levels, combined with strong winds, are believed to have dislodged the island, causing its movement across the reservoir. BC Hydro stated this is an unprecedented event for Williston Lake.

Safety Advisory for Boaters

BC Hydro has issued a warning to boaters, advising them to maintain a safe distance from the floating island. Despite its size, the forested mass is structurally unstable and poses a hazard if walked upon. The island is currently only suitable for birds.
