Local Opposition and Concerns

Despite initial promises of jobs and prosperity, local residents have expressed significant concerns and opposition. Villagers fear the project will lead to crippling environmental and economic costs, similar to protests seen globally regarding AI datacenters. The village head, BRB Naidu, noted worries among the community and a lack of answers from the government.

Government and Partner Involvement

The state government, allied with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party, is accused of attempting to obscure the true scale of the AI hub to expedite its approval and bypass stricter environmental scrutiny. Google has partnered with the Adani Group, a large Indian conglomerate, to facilitate the project's construction. Public announcements described it as a 1GW project, a substantial energy requirement, though Google referred to it as an unspecific "gigawatt scale AI hub."

Environmental Impact and Transparency

Bulldozers have already cleared land on nearby hillsides for the campus. State environmental clearances indicate a larger scale than publicly acknowledged, raising questions about transparency. The rapid progression of the project without clear answers to community concerns has fueled local distrust.
