Omacosy: Omarchy-style tiling desktop environment for macOS without SIP modification

Introduction to Omacosy

Omacosy is a newly released omarchy-style desktop environment designed for macOS. It integrates several features aimed at enhancing window management and user interaction, such as a dedicated Super key, the dwindle layout from Hyprland, and a custom-themed status bar that includes popups, sliders, and screen dimming functionalities.

Key Features and Functionality

Beyond tiling window management, Omacosy incorporates focus-follows-mouse, trackpad workspace swipes with a Mission Control-style overview that includes live previews, and focused-window border rings. It also supports unified theme switching, extending to wallpaper changes, all bootstrapped from a single repository. The system is built for macOS 26 (Tahoe) and is designed to generalize across different hardware configurations.

System Resource Usage

The desktop environment maintains a low physical memory footprint, idling at approximately 157MB across its window manager, bar, three background daemons, swipe daemon, and Karabiner. When measured on a machine with a second display, the footprint remained consistent. The `omacosy-overview` component, which caches window captures, starts at 9MB and settles around 37MB after repeated opens.

Technical Implementation

Omacosy is largely self-built, utilizing five small signed Swift binaries to replace numerous dependencies, some of which are noted as broken on macOS 26. A significant aspect of its design is that it does not require disabling System Integrity Protection (SIP), a security feature in macOS, making it accessible to users who prefer to keep SIP enabled.
