Protesters Confront Verrus Representatives Over Proposed Salem Data Center

Public Opposition and Confrontation

During a Salem City Council meeting on July 27, community members voiced strong opposition to Verrus's proposed $5.1 billion Oakline at Mill Creek data center. Protesters displayed their discontent by bringing a guillotine to the meeting venue. Verrus representatives, present to hear public comments, were confronted by protesters during a break, leading to their early departure from the meeting with police escort due to safety concerns.

City Moratorium and State Intervention

One week after the contentious meeting, Salem announced a one-year moratorium on all new data center developments to review zoning laws. However, Verrus's project application was submitted three days before this moratorium, potentially exempting it from the delay. Despite this, Oregon Governor Tina Kotek announced the termination of a deal to sell 32 acres of state-owned land intended for the Verrus project. This land forms part of the three plots designated for the data center, reducing Verrus's available land by approximately 43 acres and necessitating a revision of their development plans.

Permitting Process Continues

Even though Verrus submitted its application before the moratorium, the project still faces an extensive permitting process. This includes technical studies, adherence to permit conditions, and the establishment of enforceable agreements. The project's future remains subject to these regulatory hurdles, despite the initial filing date.
