The Exploration Company, a French space startup, has secured $450 million in Series C funding. This investment represents the largest Series C funding round ever for a European-based space company. It is also likely the largest funding round raised by a female-led company in Europe.

Leadership in European Space

Hèlene Huby, CEO of The Exploration Company, is gaining prominence in the European space community. She was recently an envoy at an International Space Summit convened by French President Emmanuel Macron, where her company was described as the fastest-growing space company in Europe. Huby previously worked at Airbus and ArianeGroup before founding The Exploration Company five years ago.

Addressing European Space Challenges

The funding comes at a time when Europe's space industry is facing increasing pressure to compete with commercial startups in the United States and China. Existing European projects, such as the Ariane 6 rocket and the IRIS² constellation, have faced issues with high costs, outdated technology, and delays. Huby has been vocal about these challenges and aims to provide solutions through her company's initiatives.

Nyx Spacecraft Development

The Exploration Company initially focused on developing a cargo capsule for low-Earth orbit. This effort has resulted in the Nyx spacecraft, which is currently undergoing NASA safety reviews. The company aims for Nyx to undertake a cargo mission to the International Space Station as early as November 2028.
